Do you have any idea how many Americans can't read? 42 million. That's right. And it's awful. I'm going to do something about that. It will take me 10 years and a lot of help but we're going to raise $200 million to put a serious dent in illiteracy and learning disabilities in our country.

We'll raise $200 million for literacy programs and to teach children with special learning challenges.
Why do this? Let me tell you a quick story.
Some years ago our family operated a newspaper printing plant. Our son David worked there with another young man. He and Jimmy became friends and worked well together.
"Dad," he told me one day, "did you know that Jimmy can't read."
That shook me. In our country, someone can't read? David himself had his own problems in school. David is smart, inquisitive, inventive. A real problem solver. But he was dyslexic. He had problems reading. This frustrated him. He was smarter than most of his classmates. Over the years, my concern for the Jimmys and Davids grew.

Early one morning, a voice in my head woke me.
The voice said, "Well, hot shot. What're you doing about it?"
I got up and Googled "illiteracy." Wow!
I discovered that 42 million Americans are functionally illiterate.
That's one in 10 of us in the world's most progressive country.
I decided that was worth making a 10-year commitment.

So here's the mission, the goal and the dream.
Our mission is to eradicate illiteracy as we've done polio.
Our dream is to help kids with learning challenges.
Our goal is to sell 20 million books to raise $200 million.
We can help a lot of people with $200 million. Please help me put my books in the hands of 20 million people. It can cut years off their journey to success. I have written many books for business people. Two of my books were written for everybody. Lead People, Manage Things is about leadership. Leadership at home and at work.
